The Ginkgo biloba tree is special in many ways. It is often referred to as a deciduous conifer, but there has been much discussion about its classification, with some suggesting that it belongs to neither category but has its own unique class. What is certain is that the tree is so old that it's called a fossil.

On the island of Bornholm, fossils have been found that are believed to be 125 million years old, and the tree is estimated to be around 240 million years old. There are both female and male trees. When the female trees reach 15-20 years old, they bear fruits resembling yellow plums but with a strong odor of rancid butter.

A. Vogel's Ginkgo biloba is based on extracts of 100% fresh Ginkgo biloba leaves, ensuring that you are getting the best possible product and thus higher value for your money. Ginkgo biloba is a fresh plant preparation. A fresh plant preparation is a herbal medicine or dietary supplement made from wild-collected plants or plants grown under controlled conditions. Characteristic of fresh plant preparations is that they are processed immediately after harvesting.

This means that the plant is brought into the factory while still fresh and then processed in its fresh state. If the plant is dried before processing, which is the usual procedure, it will lose some of its active ingredients during the drying process. This is avoided if the plant is processed from its fresh state. To extract the beneficial ingredients of fresh Ginkgo biloba, the leaves are cut into small pieces and added to an appropriate amount of drinking alcohol. After soaking for a period, the Ginkgo biloba leaves are removed. The plant substances are now extracted into the alcohol, which becomes the final product. The plant residues are then composted and returned to the garden, ensuring a sustainable production where the plant material removed from the garden is brought back.
